Mangalore, Aug 7

The Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation (KFDC) is planning to set up around 50 retail fish outlets in the State in three years, according to Mr Ramachandar Baikampady, Chairman of KFDC. Addressing presspersons here on Friday, he said that such outlets are now in Bangalore and Madikeri.

The Karnataka Fisheries Minister, Mr Anand V. Asnotikar, will inaugurate the outlet in Mangalore on August 9. Attempts will be made to provide dressed and condiment incorporated fishes in this outlet, he said.

The Karnataka Minister for Ports, Mr Krishna Palemar, will inaugurate the aquarium sales counter. In this section, aquarium and other accessories fish feed and different species of aquarium fishes will be made available. Mr Baikampady said that the work on integrated fish retail outlet is in progress in Shimoga, and it is likely to be commissioned by the end of this month. Sites have been finalised at Mysore, Chitradurga, Thirthahalli, Puttur and Sullia for establishing such outlets. There are also plans to open fish outlets at places such as Manipal, Tumkur and Virajpet.

BANGALORE BIZ

Stating that the integrated fish retail outlet at Indiranagar in Bangalore has become very popular, he said this outlet is equipped to sell fresh and frozen fish, value-added fishery products, ornamental fishes and aquarium accessories, and it also has a fish restaurant. He said that the existing fish canteen at Cubbon Park and at the Government aquarium premises in Bangalore will be renovated soon. Mobile sale of fresh fish is being carried out at Marathhalli, Ramamurthynagar, Koramangala and Yelahanka. This mobile sale will help assess the demand for fish and fishery products in different locations of Bangalore city and to plan for starting modern retail outlets in prospective locations.

ICE PLANTS

The KFDC is planning to develop ice plants, freezing plants and fish processing units in various places in the state. A modern fish processing unit will be opened at the Mangalore office of KFDC in two months. This unit will provide work to 250 women in the region.

Ice plants will be developed in Mangalore, Malpe, Gangolli, Bhatkal, Honnavar and Karwar. Considering the demand for fish in Bangalore, plans are also there to start an ice plant there. Feasibility survey will be done for starting ice plants in Shimoga and Mysore, he added.
