Trade & Labour Unions Strike at Mangalore port ‘settled partially’
The registered cargo handling workers are striking against the implementation of national tribunal award on rationalisation of the manning scale and deployment of labour. A.J. Vinayak Mangalore, Aug. 3 The ongoing strike at the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) seems to have been settled partially, with the registered cargo handling workers agreeing to discharge cargo from the fertiliser vessel at the port, considering the urgency of the need for fertiliser in Karnataka. A meeting convened by the Assistant Labour Commissioner, on Monday, to resolve the strike by the registered cargo handling workers came out with a solution to discharge cargo from the fertiliser vessel – m.v. Arcadi Progress. The Assistant Labour Commissioner will conduct another meeting on August 5 on the other demands, and will come out with an agreement within five days. The registered cargo handling workers are on strike at NMPT against the implementation of national tribunal award on rationalisation of the manning scale and deployment of labour. The NMPT implemented the tribunal award on August 1. Mr P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of NMPT, told Business Line that it was decided in the meeting convened by the Assistant Labour Commissioner that with minimum people the labourers will discharge the cargo from fertiliser vessel. However, union leaders maintained that they will discharge cargo from fertiliser vessel for free on Monday evening, and will not handle cargo from other vessels. The vessel m.v. Arcadi Progress, which arrived at New Mangalore on July 31, had discharged 1,661 tonnes of cargo on that day. The remaining 30,807 tonnes of cargo was waiting for discharge for the past three days. Mr Sadashiva Shetty, General Secretary of the Canara Stevedoring Workers’ Union (affiliated to INTUC), said that considering the interests of farmers in the State, it was decided to handle the fertiliser cargo.
