Infrastructure States - Other States First phase of Navi Mumbai airport to be operational by 2014 Our Bureau Mumbai, Aug. 3 The first phase of the Navi Mumbai airport will be operational by 2013-14, Mr Johny Joseph, Chief Secretary, Maharashtra, told presspersons here on Monday. The State, he added, has already formulated the terms of reference for the project’s environment impact analysis (EIA), which were submitted to the Ministry of Environment and Forests. The Government has zeroed in on a 1,140-hectare area (inclusive of 150 hectares of mangroves and 340 hectares of coastal marshy land) for the airport. In May, the Environment Ministry had exempted the project from coastal regulatory zone regulations. UpdateMr Joseph also gave an update on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, where a 22.5-km sea bridge was to have linked Sewri to Nhava in Raigad. He said efforts were on to revive this Rs 6,000-crore project through “newer models and financial methodologies”. It was way back in 2003 that it was first designed as a government-funded project and later changed to build-operate-transfer when the State found that it would be too expensive to build it independently. Financial bids were floated but thanks to the Reliance dispute, bids by both groups were rejected. special project vehicleA special project vehicle has now been formed to implement the project with the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation as the nodal agency, and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority as a partner. Mr Joseph said the State Cabinet would soon consider a proposal to build the second leg of the Western Freeway Project linking the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli sea link to Haji Ali.
