General, bulk cargo handling hit at New Mangalore Port

Our Bureau

Mangalore, Aug. 2 The loading and unloading of general cargo and dry bulk cargo were affected at New Mangalore Port as the strike by the registered cargo handling workers entered the second day on Sunday.

They were on strike against the implementation of national tribunal award on rationalisation of the manning scale and deployment of labour.

A late evening press release by the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) said here on Sunday that eight ships were at the port as on Sunday. Of them, three oil ships and one cement vessel wereworking. Four ships were waiting, as registered cargo handling workers are to be deployed for them. They could not be deployed since the workers abstained from work and were on strike.

“The loading and unloading of general cargo and dry bulk cargo are affected. However, the inward and outward movement of other cargoes is normal,” the release said.

The ship — m.v. Arcadi Progress — which brought 33,000 tonnes of urea imported by Kribhco (Krishak Bharati Cooperative Ltd) is waiting for discharge at berths. Kribhco has also made a request to port authorities to discharge the fertiliser cargo since it is to be supplied to the farmers in Karnataka. The port was persuading the trade unions and registered cargo handling workers to cooperate with the port in handling the cargoes, it said.
