Call to promote rice bran oil for a healthy heart

Rice bran oil needs to be promoted more aggressively in the country, as it is velthy and it is found to be helpful in reducing cholesterol and preventing cardiac ailments, according to several experts. They were speaking at the twelfth national seminar on rice bran oil and the doctors’ meet organised by the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India here on Sunday. Doctors and industry leaders from the southern states participated in the seminar.

Dr B. Soma Raju, the Chairman of Care Hospitals, said rice bran oil, used widely in Japan and the USA, was often described as the world’s healthiest edible oil and it had been found to be considerably helpful in preventing cardiac ailment. Its cholesterol-reducing properties had been widely commended.

Dr V. Chockalingam, cardiologist from Chennai, said proper dietary habits and life style were important to prevent heart ailments and judicious use of rice bran oil could be recommended.Mr. Asok Sethia, the president of the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India, and Mr R.P Goenka, chairman of the seminar, spoke enthusiastically about the effectiveness of rice bran oil in curbing heart disease. They said Andhra Pradesh, as the premier rice-producing state in the country, should play a key role in promoting the oil.

Mr M. Rajaiah, the convener of the seminar, said India had the capacity to produce 12 lakh tonnes of rice bran oil, but was producing only 8 lakh tonnes. There was a lot of untapped potential, he added.
