Poultry Egg prices decline Our Bureau Chennai, July 30 Egg prices are declining after farm-gate prices rose above a record Rs 2.50 in various parts of the country at the beginning of this month. On Thursday, the price of an egg was cut by 14 paise to Rs 2.30 by the Namakkal zone of the National Egg Coordination Committee. Elsewhere, too, prices have declined since the middle of this month. For example, prices of egg in Andhra Pradesh are now ruling at Rs 2 at the farm-gates. In other places, the prices are ruling at around Rs 2.20. Record rateThe price cut is the second in five days. On July 26, the rate was cut by 10 paise from Rs 2.44 on June 14. Earlier on July 3, the prices were raised to a record Rs 2.49. The revision is aimed at increasing egg consumption during the auspicious month of “Aadi” in Tamil Nadu. Namakkal is the hub of egg production in Tamil Nadu. At least 2.5 crore eggs are produced in the Namakkal zone. Of this, Kerala buys 50 lakh eggs, while another 50 lakh is being exported to West Asian and a few African countries. The rest is consumed within the State. It includes about 2 crore eggs that is consumed through the Tamil Nadu Noon Meal Scheme. More Stories on : Poultry
