New corneal treatment procedure

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, July 30 LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) has tied up with the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary of Harvard University to treat some difficult corneal problems, using Boston Keratoprosthesis or KPro, a telescopic device implanted in the eyes.

KPro uses biocompatible material that is not only comfortable but also less vulnerable to infection and other such problems, according to Dr Virender Sangwan of LVPEI, who took two-year training with the Harvard group on the procedure.

Addressing a press conference here, Dr Gullapalli N. Rao, Chair (LVPEI), said the procedure worked out to be cheaper for Indian patients. “In the US, the implant itself costs $6,000. In India, it is being offered at $500,” he said.

“While corneal transplantation is one of the most successful types of transplantation, the procedure poses a challenge in high-risk adult patients. Patients with ocular surface diseases, chemical injuries, infections leading to corneal ulceration or damage tend to suffer multiple graft rejections,” he said.
