Strategy Italian brand Alcott to enter kidswear; plans R&D centre
Bindu D. Menon New Delhi, July 29 Italian fashion brand Alcott will soon be entering the kidswear market. It is also evaluating the possibility of setting up a research and development centre in India. The company, which entered India last year under a franchise agreement with real estate player DLF’s retail management arm DLF Brands, will be investing Rs 15 crore to ramp up its retail presence. “Alcott’s core focus is mainly young fashion. We will be scaling up our retail presence to 20 stores by 2010,” said Mr Salvatore Colella, Chairman, Alcott. Currently, it has three stores in India and plans to have 11 stores by the end of this year alone. Alcott now imports all its finished garments. “Once we achieve a certain scale of operations in India, we may consider sourcing or even setting up a manufacturing facility. Our target is to have a design and R&D centre in the country by next year,” he added. Alcott brings out a collection of 330 styles of its women’s collection in every season and around 290 styles in the menswear segment. Asked if it had initiated a price cut for the Indian market, Mr Colella said, “There has been no price cut. However, certain ranges of clothing are comparatively cheaper than it is in the Western markets.” Alcott is present in 12 countries.
