Entry tax

The Karnataka High Court has taken a sensible decision in quashing Section 4B, 4BB of the Karnataka Tax on Entry of Goods into Local Areas Act, 1979 which allows levying of tax on vehicles purchased from outside the State. The judgment asserts that the benefits enjoyed by one state should percolate down to the other states too.

Economic unity is definitely the need of hour. Division on the basis of states against reaping economic benefits is not healthy and fails to promote the globalisation as has been observed in the judgment. Moreover, the 12 per cent entry tax on four-wheelers and 8 per cent for two-wheelers is exorbitant. Free-flow of trade and commerce between the states would benefit the people.
