Restructuring Hindustan Motors revamps auto component unit
Mr C.K. Birla Our Bureau Kolkata, July 24 Hindustan Motors has embarked on the modernisation of the auto component division as well as upgradation of the facilities for production of mini-trucks at its Uttarpara plant near here. Both the works, according to Mr C. K. Birla, Chairman of the company, would be completed this fiscal at a total cost of Rs 75 crore. He was talking to newspersons after the company’s annual general meeting here on Friday. Mr R. Santhanam, Managing Director, indicated that “within a few months”, Hindustan Motors would launch one more niche and upmarket Mitsubishi car. He, however, did not offer more details. Enquiries directed at the automobile sector reveal that the proposed new launch could be of Eclipse Spyder convertibles. Hindustan Motors has launched the Lancer and the Cedia for the local market. The company plans to introduce new models in the Chennai plant. It is also considering the introduction of new diesel as well as alternate fuel driven mini truck, the Winner. It is also taking steps to make the engines of its vehicles meet Bharat Stage-IV emission norms before the deadline. At the AGM, the Chairman informed shareholders that the company would transfer the final lot of 62.791 acres this financial year to the developer of the 314-acre IT Township and Auto Ancillary Park at Uttarpara.
