‘Unique ID scheme, a progressive move’

Our Bureau

Mangalore, July 24 The Unique Identity Authority of India (UIDAI) has the opportunity to develop a unique product minus the limitations present in similar cards in other countries, says Mr B.R. Bhat, General Manager of Corporation Bank.

Delivering a lecture organised by the Mangalore chapter of National Institute of Personnel Management on the Unique Identity scheme and its benefits, he said the scheme is expected to become the single universal identification mechanism over a period of time, across all institutions of the government and private sector.

Stating that there was bound to be some scepticism whenever anything novel is attempted, he said, “UID is a positive and progressive attempt initiated which would enable citizens of this country to possess an identity which would suffice for all his/her statutory, judicial and personal needs.” Outlining the benefits of UID, Mr Bhat said it would obviate the need for multiple documentary proofs of identity when accessing government or private services.

The UID would also serve as the basis for e-governance services by incorporating online verification of identity. It would help the Government ensure that benefits under various welfare programmes reach the intended beneficiaries, prevent leakages and minimise frauds.

It would enable financial institutions to exchange information on defaulters and encourage responsible borrower behaviour, he added.
