AI to delay payment of incentives

Our Bureau

New Delhi, July 23 Air India is to hold back the productivity linked incentives (PLI) component of the July salary which will be paid to its employees on time at the end of this month.

Confirming the development, a senior airline official said that the employees will get their PLI payments by August 20. The PLI constitutes about 40 per cent of the monthly pay package.

The move has been undertaken as the company seeks to cut its wage bill.

Air India, which is expecting to post an accumulated loss in the region of Rs 7,200 crore at the end of March this year, is working to cut its annual wage bill of about Rs 3,000 crore.

The airline is taking various steps to cut its wage bill, including announcing a scheme that allows its employees to go on leave without pay for up to five years. The steps the airline has taken to cut losses will be reviewed by the Committee of Secretaries headed by the Cabinet Secretary this Saturday.
