Jordan Tourism sees India as key market

Our Bureau

Bangalore, July 22 With the Indian economy not affected by the slowdown much, the Jordan Tourism Board sees a potential market here.

Apart from identifying India as a key market for this year, “we are using the country as our first entry into the Asian markets,” says Mr Anwar Atalla, Director of Marketing, Jordan Tourism Board.

With the discerning Indian traveller looking for unique and new destinations, he believes that Jordan could be a great attraction with its cultural, religious, natural, and leisure aspects.

Tourist-friendly process

To make Jordan attractive as a tourist destination, there are plans to make the visa application and grant process more tourist-friendly.

“We are working out on a plan to grant groups of five and above visa on arrival. We do realise that the trend today is individual tourists. So we are hoping that the visa-on-arrival issue for individual travellers from India be cleared by the year-end,” says Mr Atalla.

Last year, there were about 38,000 Indian tourists to Jordan, out of about three million tourists.

Tourism revenues touched about $3 billion last year, contributing to about 14 per cent of Jordan’s GDP.

“Overall, there has been a 3-4 per cent increase in tourist arrivals last year,” says Mr Atalla.
