Chennai, July 17

Tamil Nadu Government’s revenue from alcoholic beverages has jumped about 20 per cent in 2008-09 compared with the previous year, according to the policy note of the Prohibition and Excise Department tabled in the Assembly, on Friday.

Revenue from sale of alcoholic beverages is expected to touch Rs 10,602 crore in 2008-09 compared to Rs 8,822 crore the previous year.

The income includes excise revenue of Rs 5,755 crore (Rs 4,764 crore) and sales tax of Rs 4,846 crore (Rs 4,057 crore).

Sales grow

Sales for Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Ltd (TASMAC), the exclusive wholesaler and retailer of alcoholic beverages, continues to grow year-on-year with sales of IMFS (Indian Made Foreign Spirits) at about 35.5 million cases (30 million cases) and beer 22 million cases (19.6 million cases).

Comparing this with the figures of State’s income tabled earlier, sales of alcoholic beverages contributed to nearly half of the total tax revenue of Rs 22,570 crore in 2008-09. In the previous year the total tax revenue was Rs 19,952 crore.

Tamil Nadu is well set to grow this income with additional capacities going on stream in 2008-09. According to the policy note, license has been granted to one unit for IMFS to come up in Pudukottai District and another for a brewery in Tirunelveli. It has also issued permission for the expansion of eight distilleries connected with sugar mills.
