Narayana Hrudayalaya’s cancer care centre to offer affordable treatment

Our Bureau

Bangalore, July 17 Narayana Hrudayalaya, promoted by cardiologist Dr Devi Shetty, has launched what it calls the world’s largest cancer treatment facility on its campus at Bangalore.

The 1,400-bed Mazumdar-Shaw Cancer Center would focus on providing affordable and hi-tech cancer treatment to patients across the country.

Announcing the launch of the cancer care centre at a press conference here on Friday, Ms Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairman and Managing Director, Biocon Ltd, who in her individual capacity has invested around Rs 40 crore in the project, said the country would now have “bespoke treatment that is unique to each cancer patient.” There would be a Tumour Board, comprising a multidisciplinary team for each region of the body.

Dr Shetty, Chairman, Narayana Hrudayalaya, said the facility would soon be expanded to accommodate 5,000 patients and 12,000 outpatients every day. “As recurrent cost is less in cancer treatment, I think our capacity to increase cancer care at affordable fees is within our reach,” said Dr Shetty.

The Mazumdar-Shaw Cancer Center would compete with Government hospitals in terms of pricing, he said.

Commenting on the investment in the project, Dr Shetty said that “a centre like this would need an investment of at least Rs 300 crore, but as we have most of the infrastructure up and running, it would be much less.”

The centre has specialised medical teams to treat specific regions such as head and neck cancer, breast cancer and cervical cancer. The medical expertise is from renowned universities such as Cornell University, New York and Harvard University.

Narayana Hrudayalaya has promoted the Health City concept that includes a 1,000-bed heart hospital, a 500-bed orthopaedic hospital and a 300-bed eye hospital in Bangalore.
