Kollam Technopark master plan okayed

Thiruvananthapuram, July 16 The master plan for Technopark Kollam has been approved by the Technopark Thiruvananthapuram Project Implementation Board.

The park, which is being developed as a ‘spoke’ of Technopark Thiruvananthapuram, will soon be notified as a special economic zone, said an official press note. The proposed Technopark Kollam is to come up on 40 acres at Kundara in Kollam district. The land required for the park has already been allotted by the State Government and the foundation stone for the park laid in February this year.

“Conceptual design for a modern IT building, measuring half a million sq ft of built-up space incorporating the green building concept has been approved by the Board,” said Dr Ajay Kumar, Secretary, Information Technology, Government of Kerala, who is also the Chairman of the Technopark Board. The building planned for Technopark Kollam has a futuristic design, he added.

According to Mr Mervin Alexander, CEO, Technopark, the first phase of Technopark Kollam — with a built-up space of 1 lakh sq ft — is expected to be ready for occupation by August 2010. Apart from this, developed plots of various sizes will be offered on lease to co-developers. When completed, the proposed park is expected to employ around 8,000 IT professionals, said the press release.

Besides road access, Technopark Kollam will also have access from the backwaters as the site is located on the banks of the Ashtamudi lake. The Kerala Inland Water Navigation Department has drawn up a plan to create facilities to promote water transport to the park, thereby easing the traffic on the highway, the release stated. The Technopark authorities have already approved the proposal for a boat jetty in the park, it added.
