Cochin Shipyard pact with SCI for building 2 platform vessels

Our Bureau

Kochi, July 16 Cochin Shipyard has signed a contract with Shipping Corporation of India for construction of two platform supply vessels (PSVs).

With this, the total order book position of CSL is 20 ships consisting of 15 PSVs, four anchor handling tug supply ships (AHTS) and one indigenous aircraft carrier project. The recent order of PSVs signed with SCI is of modern design with sophisticated diesel electric propulsion and clean design notation.

These are scheduled for delivery in 2011. This design of Rolls Royce UT 755 is being built for the first time worldwide, a press release said.

Clean design

The diesel electric propulsion design of the two platform supply vessel signed with SCI provides flexibility in operation and is a clean design which meets all the environmental rules and regulations currently in vogue and also those which may come into force in the near future.

This vessel also has safety features which enable it to carry low flash liquid such as methanol. Besides, the vessel’s bridge arrangements are laid out according to Naut-OSV standard of DNV.

The notation relates to the highest standard of bridge layout ergonomics for lowering fatigue of persons operating the ships.

In 2008-09, CSL delivered four PSVs to various international owners. In 2009-10, the yard, has, so far, delivered two ships, both PSVs, for European and the US owners. Another nine ships of small class are slated for delivery during the year.

The yard has also signed contracts for four ships for SCI during 2009-10 consisting of two AHTS and two PSVs.

The keel of the indigenous aircraft carrier was laid by the Union Defence Minister in February.

Awards

Based on the provisional accounting statements, the company’s financial performance during 2008-09 is expected to surpass that of the previous year by a wide margin.

The company also bagged the coveted first place in the large industry group ‘MKK Nair Memorial Productivity Award” instituted by the Kerala State Productivity Council consecutively for the second year.

The company was also awarded the ‘Performance Excellence Award” instituted by Indian Institute of Industrial Engineering consecutively for 2007 and 2008, the release added.
