Pratt & Whitney to tap IISc talent

Our Bureau

Bangalore, July 15 Aircraft engines maker Pratt & Whitney plans to tap Indian scientific talent in its efforts to develop new fuel-efficient and eco-friendly gas turbine engines.

It has put in an unspecified amount to set up an endowed chair at the Indian Institute of Science to support advanced research in gas turbine engineering, Mr Paul Adams, Senior Vice-President, Pratt & Whitney Engineering, announced on Tuesday.

More efficient engines

Over the next decade, PW aims to have second-generation engines that can be 25 per cent more efficient over its present ones. India is a strong market for such engines.

The chair will focus on getting IISc scholars to work on advanced research in propulsion system technology, he said.

With this, Pratt & Whitney added a footprint to its academic relations across the world, Mr Adams said. “The IISc has outstanding technical capabilities that complement our fundamental research needs,” he added.

Mutual benefit

Dr B.N. Raghunandan, former Chairman of the institute’s Department of Aerospace Engineering, said it would enhance the indigenous efforts to develop aero-engines. The US major, too, “will have increased visibility of future talent in the gas turbine engine field and will be in a position to recommend future engineers to key Indian business partners, including [P&W associate] Infotech Enterprises and NAL.”

P&W, whose engines power a large number of Indian aircraft, is also working with National Aerospace Labs – the CSIR lab that is tasked with developing small and mid-sized civil aircraft within the country.
