Rains lash Mumbai

Our Bureau

Mumbai, July 14 Rail, roads and air services were disrupted in Mumbai on Tuesday as heavy rains lashed the commercial capital, creating severe water-logging in several low-lying areas and poor visibility at the airport.

While train services on the Western line continued with delays of about 40-45 minutes due to water-logging on Bandra and Vile Parle stations, Central and Harbour line was shut for three hours as tracks between Dadar and Thane section on Central line and Vadala and Vashi on the Harbour got inundated.

Heavy traffic jams on roads remained the order of the day.

Mumbai airport witnessed delay in 84 departure flights and 35 arrival flights on Tuesday. At 6.30 p.m. the airport witnessed delay of 45 minutes on departure flights and 20 minutes to half an hour delay in arrival flights, said a spokesperson of Mumbai International Airport Ltd.

While no flights were cancelled, Jet Airways Baroda-Mumbai flight was diverted to Ahmedabad.

According to reports, Mithi river crossed the danger level mark of 2.8 metre at around 3.15 p.m., following which the Navy had been placed on high alert and residents were being evacuated from the nearby area of Kurla in surburban Mumbai.

The waters in the Mithi river, however, receded after 5 p.m.
