Variety - Wildlife
Owly haul

– C. Ratheesh Kumar

A barn owl seized by the Fort police in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday. Acting on a tip-off, the police chased an autorickshaw carrying the caged bird and recovered it, while the four occupants of the vehicle fled. The bird was handed over to the forest department. It is learnt that an owl fetches Rs 1 lakh to 2 lakh in North India, where some businessmen use it in religious rituals for prosperity. The Indian Barn Owl (Tyto alba stertens) is strictly nocturnal and acts as a rodent control agent.
