Mormugao port Q1 cargo handling up 22%

Panaji, July 13 The Mormugao Port Trust (MPT), has shown an upward trend in cargo handling during the current financial year.

Goa’s major port has handled 12.5 million tonnes of traffic in the first quarter (April-June’09) as against 10.2 mt during the corresponding period of last year, registering a growth of 22 per cent.

The Chairman of the MPT said that the port had handled a record of cargo traffic of 41.68 mt, surpassing the previous best of 35.13 mt handled during 2007-08.

He said the port was celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. The cargo handled included 9.8 mt of iron ore exports (8.1 mt) against the 8.5 mt target set by the Ministry for the period.

The major importer of iron ore is China with an intake of 8.6 mt, thus registering an increase of 42 per cent over last year.
