Chennai, July 13 The Electronic Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) is in talk with various mobile service providers to provide the m-governance (developed by a private company) platform, an online service, to citizens and businesses.

After e-governance, it is now m-governance, according to the Elcot Managing Director, Dr Santhosh Babu. Elcot is involved in various e-governance and computer education initiatives of the Tamil Nadu Government.

“We are ready with the application and would like to roll out m-governance in the next couple of months,” he told newspersons at a curtain raiser meeting to announce CeTIT-2009, a two-day conference-cum-exhibition on e-governance. Users can pay utility bills such as for electricity, water and sewerage and various taxes through their mobile phones for a fee, he said.

“While we are ready with various e-governance applications, it is now time to roll them out across the State,” he said. Various applications will be showcased at CeTIT 2009 to be held here on July 17 and 18. The event, organised by FICCI and co-hosed by Elcot and the Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency, will create awareness in harnessing advances in IT and opportunities presented to restructure government, citizen and business interface with the objective of better governance.

While Connect ICT (information, communication and technology) is an event to showcase Tamil Nadu as a destination of choice for ICT investment, the CeTIT will be for e-governance, he said. FICCI is planning to make CeTIT an annual event, said an official.

Speakers at the event include Mr A. Raja, Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology; Dr Poongothai Aladi Aruna, State Minister for Information Technology; Mr S.R. Rao, Additional Secretary, Union Ministry of Communication and Information Technology; and Mr Keng Lee, Director, Institute for Information Industry, Taiwan, said Mr N.R. Patnaik, a member of the event’s task force.
