Education loan subsidy: A respite for parents, students

Higher education is clearly the primary focus of the Finance Minister as he has announced an increase of Rs 2,000 crore to Rs 9,596 crore in the Plan outlay, from Rs 7,593.50 crore in the Interim Budget.

This is surely a move in the right direction as the Government is giving appropriate importance to the education sector.

Skills development has been given priority by allocating Rs 495 crore for community polytechnics, while “mission education through ICT” has been allocated Rs 900 crore.

The Budget has good news for students from the economically weaker sections who are seeking educational loans by introducing interest subsidy on education loans whereby there would be no interest on loan for higher studies which is a great respite for parents and students.

Ajey Kumar, Country Head, GEMS India
