Chennai, June 29 The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) will implement a Rs 2,032-crore scheme to upgrade water supply and sewage disposal in Chennai and its suburbs.

Moving the demand for grants to the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, the Deputy Chief Minister, Mr M.K. Stalin, said on Monday that the scheme under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission will involve expenditure of Rs 546 crore for six schemes in Chennai city and Rs 1,485 crore covering 22 schemes in the suburbs to the north and west of Chennai.

This will help develop water supply and sewage disposal infrastructure.

In addition, the Chennai Corporation and the Public Works Department will jointly implement a Rs 1,448-crore scheme for flood prevention.

This scheme will be partly funded under the JNNURM, with Chennai Corporation bringing in Rs 815 crore.

This project to be implemented over the next three years will involve construction of stormwater drain networks and rehabilitation of existing structures.

Solid waste management

Two projects for setting up municipal solid waste management facilities are awaiting the clearance of the Pollution Control Board, Mr Stalin said.

One project coming up at Kondungaiyur to the north of Chennai is a waste-to-manure project and the other at Perungudi to the south will use the municipal waste to generate power and produce manure.

According to official sources, the State Government recently cleared the proposal to allot nearly 3 lakh sq.m of land near Perungudi to Hydroair Tectonics Ltd, a Mumbai-based company, for implementing an integrated municipal solid waste management project under the JNNURM. The land was leased at Re 1 a sq.m a year for 20 years.

The Mumbai-based company has floated a special purpose vehicle, APT Waste Management Company Pvt Ltd, to implement the public-private partnership project.
