Exports from STPI units up 12.4%

Moumita Bakshi Chatterjee

New Delhi, June 29 Exports by units registered under the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) scheme are estimated to have touched about Rs 2,02,580 crore during 2008-09, a 12.4 per cent growth over the previous year.

The STPI exports stood at Rs 1,80,155 crore in FY08.

According to official statistics, besides the STPI scheme, as much as Rs 17,697 crore of IT exports are estimated to have been logged by Special Economic Zone units in FY09, compared to Rs 5,618 crore a year ago.

“These are the tentative export figures recorded by the STPI for its various centres and the final numbers would come once the audited figures are reported to STPI around July-September,” a senior official said.

As many as 616 new units were registered under the STPI scheme in 2008-09, against 834 new units registered during the previous year. Officials said the lower level of registrations was on account of the prevailing market conditions, the overall uncertainty over the extension of the STPI scheme, as well as the diversion of investments to SEZs.

The extension of the industry-friendly STPI scheme for five years tops the wish list of the Indian IT industry. Even the IT and Communications Ministry is pitching aggressively for an extension of the tax benefits available under the export-oriented scheme. The STPI scheme was initially set to lapse in March 2009, but was subsequently given a one-year extension.

According to the STPI data, Bangalore maintained its lead over other centres contributing an estimated Rs 64,760 crore towards the STPI export basket .
