New Delhi, June 26 Construction work at the Jindal Steel and Power’s (JSPL) greenfield integrated steel project in Orissa is in full swing. The project located close to Angul is being developed on around 4,000 acres.

“Site levelling and civil work is in full swing and we hope to commission the plant by the financial year 2011-12,” said Mr Vikrant Gujral, Vice-Chairman and CEO, JSPL in response to a query on its status.

The company is currently working towards the first phase of the project, where the capacity is slated to be two units of 2 million tonnes each. “ Ultimately, its capacity will be 6.5 million tonnes expandable to 12.5 million tonnes,” said Mr Gujral, adding that for the project, going forward, the company may acquire more land.

On Thursday, the company gave a Rs 120-crore order to Areva T&D India for 400/220 kV sub-station and power transformers for the project.

According to earlier reports, in January, JSPL had sought the support of the Orissa Government for the project by way of recommendation of iron ore mining lease (ML) in its favour. The company had claimed it has fulfilled all the conditions required for recommendation of the ML.
