Assocham suggests tax holiday extension for hotels

Our Bureau

New Delhi, June 16

The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham) has suggested to the Delhi Government that it should urge the Finance Ministry for an extension to the tax holiday scheme by five years and the removal of service tax for all categories of hotels, including five-stars.

The chamber feels this should be especially done for Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) as it would speed up the construction of new hotels for the large number of tourists expected to come for the Commonwealth Games scheduled for next year.

According to Assocham, there are already 70 new hotel projects that are under various stages of development and would add 19,000 rooms in the next two years. Besides, some leading hoteliers are also looking for ideal sites in Delhi and the NCR.

In the NCR alone, about 27 new hotels are coming up, adding approximately 4,900 rooms. Around 20 more hotels are also likely to come up in Gurgaon.
