AP gets tough on bogus ration cards

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, June 14 The State Government will be launching a special drive to eliminate bogus white rations cards. It would also take up the issue of fresh white ration cards to eligible families.

In a review meeting with officials on the implementation of the public distribution system and other social security schemes at the State Secretariat on Saturday, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, directed the officials to speed up the process of eliminating bogus and duplicate ration cards.

Some eligible families still did not have the white ration cards, while some cards were issued in the name of non-existing households and families, he observed.

“I have also received complaints that many of the ration shop dealers have bogus ration cards with them,” he said.

The officials made a presentation before the Chief Minister on the proposed de-duplication process to curb the bogus cards in different categories.

Action plan

The plan of action would include conducting physical verification at the households along with the computerised data on the cards. The exercise would begin immediately and would be completed within three months, Dr Reddy was informed.

The Chief Minister directed the officials to conduct the physical verification using specially-constituted teams with officials and social auditors of rural development. About 20 teams should be constituted for each mandal, he said.

“The exercise should be foolproof and OMR (optical mark recognition) forms should be used for this purpose,” he said.

Dr Reddy also directed the officials to provide cards to eligible families who do not have cards at the earliest, to give them access to the various welfare schemes.
