Shipping/Ports Power transfer at Haldia The change in the political scenario in Haldia – which is not only the location of a major port but also home to several important industrial units (with sizeable imports and exports) set upby the Tatas, Exide and several MNCs – has thrown up new challenges before the users of the port and others. Recently work at the port was affected by strained industrial relations – something not unexpected in a transition period when an old political force slowly ced es ground to a new one trying to establish control. The political leader and his cronies who till the other day called the shots have now virtually disappeared from the scene in the face of strong opposition from people, who not long ago held them in awe. In some industrialist units the new forces have already started flexing their muscles. The users of the port and others, particularly those having plans for massive investments in port-related operations, are apprehensive as a result. Now they have to start afresh. What causes concern is the price of the new settlement. OUR BUREAU More Stories on : Shipping/Ports
