Karnataka to hold 12 job fairs this year

Bangalore, June 8 In view of the positive response to the job fairs conducted by the State Government, the Government has decided to enlarge the scope of this initiative to address the issue of unemployment.

The Karnataka Government has decided to hold 12 job fairs in different district headquarters in the current financial year (2009-10). The Chief Minister, Mr B.S. Yeddyurappa, on Monday presided a meeting of heads of 17 task forces, missions and commissions constituted by the Government and reviewed their progress during the last one year.

Speaking to presspersons after a three-hour meeting, Mr. Yeddyurappa said a decision has been taken to hold 12 job fairs in different districts under the Skills Development Commission programme.

Under the programme, the Labour Department held jobs fairs in Bangalore, Mysore, Hubli, Mangalore, Belgaum and Gulbarga during the last one year and provided jobs to 2,306 candidates. As many as 475 companies in different sectors participated in job fairs and recruited candidates. Over 87,000 job aspirants participated in job fairs held in six places, he said.

Heads of task forces on science, organic farming, bio-fuels, non-residential forum, skills development mission, Western Ghats, Agricultural mission, the Dr Nanjundappa report on regional imbalances, coastal development authority, lake development authority, mission group on industries, and other bodies participated in the programme and presented their progress reports before the Chief Minister, Chief Secretary Sudhakar Rao and other top officials of various departments.

Mr Yeddyurappa, who heard grievances of various missions and task forces, expressed satisfaction over progress made by task forces and commissions and said there was a need to speed up the pace of work to achieve success in all fields.

Model universities

The Government has proposed to make University of Mysore, Mysore, and Karnatak University, Dharwad as “model universities” in the State by developing infrastructure. Views of all vice-chancellors would be obtained and a plan would be prepared to upgrade both universities, he said.

Referring to NRI Forum, the Chief Minister said a database of all NRIs would be maintained to attract investment at the Global Investors’ Meet to be held at the end of 2009.

Organic farming

The Task Force on Organic Farming been set up to promote organic farming in 174 taluks of the State and 52,126 farmers had been registered so far.

During his visits to taluks, he would hold discussions with organic farmers. All India Radio would broadcast a programme on organic farming from August 15.

In the next few months, marketing outlets would be opened to promote sale of organic products in taluks. Several Kannada organisations in the US have come forward to donate funds for better maintenance of cowsheds in the State, he said.

Referring to the progress made by the Task Force on Quality Control, he said action would be taken against those officials who indulge in inferior quality of works. The meeting also discussed various strategies to be adopted by task forces and commissions in 2009-10.
