Govt funding sought for knitwear tech mission

Tirupur exporters keen to tap winter clothing segment.

Coimbatore, June 3 The Tirupur Exporters’ Association has sought the Union Textiles Ministry’s support for funding the Knitwear Technology Mission (KTM).

The President of Tirupur Exporters’ Association, Mr A. Sakthivel, said the AEPC (Apparel Export promotion Council) set up the KTM and funded the construction of the building in Tirupur. “We seek the Ministry’s support to the tune of Rs 25 crore for export growth of the knitwear sector,” he said.

Synthetic fibre

Mr Sakthivel said that the cotton knitted garments exported from Tirupur catered only to the summer season clothing needs. “The remaining nine months is winter. We are unable to supply winter season clothing because of non-availability of the right kind of synthetic fibre and lack of technology for processing the special fibres. Despite the huge market potential, we are not able to cater to the winter period.”

To overcome this problem and to increase the total garments export via synthetic garments, the industry requires synthetic fibres/yarn/fabric at competitive rates. The Government has to support this project by funding the machinery used in the manufacture of synthetic garments, initially, and later extend support by setting up a design studio, Mr Sakthivel said.

The association is seeking Government support for the purchase of special machinery, setting up a design studio, R&D, chemical processing department, eco lab, fabric information, garment development department, consultancy services and for transfer of technology.
