Foreign Trade States - West Bengal ‘UK success in eastern region is growing’ Our Bureau Kolkata, June 1 West Bengal has a long way to go in developing its infrastructure if it wants to attract more investment, not just from overseas companies but from within India itself. This was stated by Mr Simon Wilson, British Deputy High Commissioner to Eastern India, at an interactive with members of the Indian Chamber of Commerce here on Monday. “The next few years will be crucial”, Mr Wilson observed, adding, “who would have thought that the political dynamic would change 360 degrees in three years”. He, however, felt that West Bengal should gain in the new administration in New Delhi, with eight ministers from the State; and two holding the vital portfolios of finance and railways. The economic downturn, he pointed out, had created a strong and growing interest among the UK companies in the Indian market as more and more UK companies were looking at India for business opportunities in joint ventures for manufacture, R&D, third-country projects and straightforward marketing. The list of UK success in the eastern region was growing, covering wide areas such as education, information technology, metals and mining, R&D, infrastructure and power. “In the past three years, we’ve brought three delegations focusing on regeneration and water front development and right now seven state power regulatory authorities from eastern region are visiting the UK in a joint initiative between the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission and the UK Trade and Investment to exchange best practices between the two countries”, Mr Wilson added.
