Outlook Industry & Economy - Non-conventional Energy
Mr Prasad Menon Our Bureau Mumbai, May 31 Tata Power is bullish on the roadmap for renewable energy. By 2017, the company wants to produce 25 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources (which are carbon neutral) and to 35 per cent by 2030. With an installed capacity of 2,700 MW, Tata Power produces about 16 per cent of power from green energy sources like hydro and wind. Mr Prasad Menon, Managing Director, told reporters here at a recent press meet that the company would focus on concentrated solar thermal, geothermal, coal-bed methane and coal beneficiation technologies. It will also continue to look at opportunities in hydro and wind power generation. In his view, scaling up of renewable power production would happen once the company got a grip on new green energy technologies. Tata Power will also consider options for power production from waste gases released by Tata Steel. As for wind energy, the company has an installed capacity of 143 MW. Its wind farms in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka produce about 177 million units of power. By April 2010, Tata Power will produce nearly 300 MW of wind energy, Mr Menon said. The company will invest about Rs 3,000 crore in its Mumbai licence area over the next three years for power transmission and distribution. It will focus its energies on suburban Mumbai as a recent Supreme Court order has paved the way for power distribution in this area, he added.
