Haldia worried about Dhamra effect



Construction work on at Dhamra port.

According to a report, Kolkata Port Trust is believed to be uncomfortable with the prospect of Dhamra port, a bulk cargo handling port being developed in Orissa by Tata Steel and L&T, starting operation from next year. The apprehension, according to the report, is that Dhamra will take away a sizeable chunk of the bulk cargoes currently being handled Haldia, reducing it to a barge port from its present status of a bulk cargo handing port. Inquiries, however, reveal tha t Dhamra, instead of competing with Haldia, would actually like to play a complementary role to Haldia. At present, Tata Steel’s presence at Haldia is fairly strong and, in all likelihood, will continue to be so in coming years, even after the commissioning of Dhamra. This is because the private sector steel giant will need both the ports in its own interest. In fact, Tata Steel also operates at Paradip port which, despite Dhamra, hopes to post healthy growth in traffic throughput in the coming years. This is not surprising. After all, the size of the cake is large and increasing.
