Social security scheme for construction workers: Kharge

Our Bureau

New Delhi, May 29 The Labour and Employment Minister, Mr M. Mallikarjun Kharge, who took charge on Friday, said that his top priority would be to implement a social security scheme for the benefit of construction workers.

“Our first priority would be implementation of the social security scheme as lot of construction activities are taking place and most of the labourers are in the unorganised sectors,” he told the media after assuming office.

He said his Ministry would ensure bringing all BPL families under the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana within the next three years, as also its coverage to APL unorganised workers.

job losses

The Minister expressed concern over the job losses taking place due to the economic downturn.

He said, “We will look into the problem of job losses arising out of recession.”

objective

The other objective of his Ministry, he said, was promulgating the employment policy and expanding the skill development initiative by training 50 crore workers by 2022.

He also said that the Ministry would bring about amendments in the EPF and ESI Acts.

infrastructure

Under the national health insurance scheme, the Labour Ministry wants to use the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation’s infrastructure of hospitals and medical centres to provide health services to BPL people under the scheme.

On the question of whether the EPFO interest rate can be maintained at more than 8.5, the Minister responded, “We would see what can be done and what is judicious.”
