Education States - Karnataka ‘A degree in fisheries science offers bright scope’ A.J. Vinayak Mangalore, May 24 Aquaculture, which is a fast-developing food producing sector, is expected to offer plenty of career opportunities for technically qualified graduates. In such a situation, fisheries science course offers excellent career opportunities, nationally and globally, for fisheries graduates, said Dr Y. Basavaraju, Dean (Fisheries), College of Fisheries, Mangalore. He told Business Line here that the four-year BFSc (bachelor of fisheries science) course witnessed a growth of 25 per cent in student intake in the last academic year. “We are expecting a good response this year also,” he said. Dr Basavaraju said fisheries graduates have opportunities in academic institutions, research organisations, Government development departments, financial institutions and in the aquaculture and processing industry. In addition to this, new opportunities are emerging in marketing, agri-business, supply-chain integration, value addition, responsible sourcing and retailing, and product and process certification. Responsible and sustainable aquaculture for rural development is now increasingly being promoted by national and international development organisations, he said.
