Kerala Tourism’s Web initiative

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, May 22 For several years now, Kerala Tourism’s Web site has had an ‘event calendar’ to help tourists keep tabs on various important festivals and other events in the State. Now, Kerala Tourism is working on setting up an Internet database of all festivals, big and small, in the State.

Inspired by Wikipedia, the free online encyclopaedia that features user-generated content, the ‘Kerala festivals wiki’ will have material submitted by members of the public, said Mr M. Sivasankar, Director, Kerala Tourism. At the same time, the site will also have information that has been collected over the years by Kerala Tourism and its various partners, he added.

The festivals database will be accessible through the Kerala Tourism Web site. It will have a strong local flavour as contributors will be able to provide even the smallest of details on various festivals in Kerala, including information on festivals that are currently not very well known, he told Business Line.

Site launch

Contributors will also be able to provide details of the myths behind a festival, other facts about a festival and can even upload photographs and video clips of the festival, he said. Meanwhile, Kerala Tourism has unveiled a ‘blog aggregator’ that brings together links to various travel blogs, Web sites and Internet discussions on Kerala.

The site can be accessed directly on www.destinationkerala.info or through the Kerala Tourism Web site ( www.keralatourism.org). It allows registered users to store tourism-based discussions on Kerala in one place and share bookmarks with friends.
