Channels and Franchises Nikon India to appoint 400 new dealers G. Naga Sridhar Hyderabad, May 21 Nikon India, a fully owned arm of Nikon Corporation, Japan, will be adding 400 new dealers this year to expand its reach. “Our primary focus now is on strengthening the distribution channel. Our growth in India for the last two years has been highly satisfactory,” Mr Hidehiko Tanaka, Managing Director, Nikon India, told Business Line. Focus on serviceCurrently, Nikon has 800 dealerships across the country, besides two exclusive retail outlets to promote its digital SLR (Single Lens Reflex) cameras in New Delhi and Mumbai. “We are also focussing more on service with 18 service facilities. We will also strengthen our sales force (they are called demonstrators by the company) by recruiting over 100 this year,” he said. The company aims to tap 45 per cent market share in SLRs and 10 per cent in the compact segment by 2010. The market in India is estimated at over one million units which is dominated by the compact segment, he added. The current market share of Nikon, which had commenced its operations in India in 2007, is 7 per cent and 35 per cent in compact and SLR segments, respectively. Imaging technologyOn the next generation imaging technology, Mr Tanaka said technology which can make sharing of images/photographs easier and less-costlier was in the offing. On the diversification front, Nikon is waiting for the instrument and semiconductor sectors to gain momentum in India. “Nikon has strong strengths in instruments for hi-tech industry and equipment for semi-conductors. But in India, the industry is yet to catch up. Once, this happens, it will give us significant revenues as a single unit of semi-conductor equipment can bring over $50 million,” Mr Tanaka said. On the impact of recession, he said, “Recession is there, but it has not yet adversely impacted us”. More Stories on : Channels and Franchises | Photographic & Allied Products
