Trend Micro sees rise in malwares, complexity this year

L.N. Revathy

Coimbatore, May 14 Trend Micro predicts an increase in malware (specifically targeted at Web 2.0 features, technologies and culture) as well as an increase in overall malware complexity this year.

Cyber criminals will start using Internet browsers and other Web-applications and streaming media players to distribute malware. The rise of browser-as-a-platform applications will serve as avenues for exploitation and cyber criminals are likely to join the ‘in the cloud’ bandwagon.

‘Threats exploiting bugs in ‘alternative’ operating systems will persist, while popular operating systems will remain a target for malware authors. 2009 may see malware specifically designed to target mobile devices and the emergence of ‘3G botnets’, says Mr Amit Nath, Country Manager, Trend Micro (India and SAARC).

Cyber threats

Recapping the cyber threat scenario, he said: “The security landscape has changed rapidly to make threats appear real. The biggest threat that IT companies are seeing today is the blended threat. Spam though will continue to stay as the cheapest way for spread of information.”

Mr Nath expects an estimated 40 per cent of spam to be embedded with URL, leading to malicious downloads or commercial advertisement.

“Web threat protection and Embedded URL domain analysis are some of the key solutions Trend Micro would focus on, this year,” he said.

“Customer education is the key to handle the situation. They need to deploy security solutions that help protect from threats out there. Simple steps such as strong password management, updated AV solution, WiFi usage can all help,” says Mr Nath

Expanding workforce

With the advent of Web 2.0 and an expanding workforce, Trend Micro perceives the need to stay protected. “Today customers are doing business on the Internet and there is a rapid increase in mobile work force. Imagine the impact on the productivity of the workforce if they are not protected,” he said.
