Ashok Chawla assumes charge as Finance Secretary

New Delhi, May 12 The Economic Affairs Secretary, Mr Ashok Chawla, has been appointed as Finance Secretary.

A 1973 batch IAS officer of the Gujarat cadre, Mr Chawla has been Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs in the Finance Ministry since September 2008.

He is holding additional charge of the Department of Financial Services since May 1. Mr Chawla assumed charge as Finance Secretary at North Block here today.

Mr Chawla has a masters degree in economics from the Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University. He was Director/Managing Director of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd, Gujarat from 1991 to 1995. Also, he was Managing Director of Gujarat Industrial Investment Corporation Ltd in 1996-97.

From February 2007 to September 2008, Mr Chawla was Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation. He was Additional Secretary (Economic Affairs) in the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance from April 2005 to January 2007.
