Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam, May 11 A sophisticated instrument called wave rider buoy, costing Rs 1 crore, was installed at Gangavaram port on Monday to detect disturbances in waves in the deep sea which indicate impending disasters such as tsunamis, cyclones and which can also be used to detect movement of fish such as tuna.

According to Prof. B. Satyanarayana, vice-chancellor of Andhra University, the instrument would transmit data to the Bay of Bengal Research Centre in the university through satellite and it would be analysed there to arrive at the conclusions. Three such instruments have been installed on the west coast and one at Puducherry and they are all functioning well, he added.

According to Prof. Rajendra Prasad, principal of the Andhra University Science College, a separate Web site will be launched to give out information and data culled through the instrument. The instrument would be of great use in detecting the movement of deep-sea tuna.
