Opinion - Letters
NGOs and people

It is sad to read the writings of Sharad Joshi against NGOs in the rural environment and agriculture, in particular. He seems to have forgotten the work of people who have rendered signal services in the countryside through NGOs.

Many of these have been through outstanding individual effort, such as that of Rajendra Singh, who recharged the jugads of the Alwar belt in Rajasthan and won the Magsaysay Award.

The author’s position is a form of the neo-liberal mindset that has come to characterise the government stance, including that farmers should buy the genetically modified seeds from the co-opertives.

But when the farmers want to sell their produce, nobody is buying any of it. Farmers are dying because of the sellout of the Indian position to the WTO. The widespread depression in the farm sector, so well reported in Frontline, seems to have been forgotten on the pages of Business Line!
