Hyundai's weight reduction drive

Chennai, May 2

Mr V. Vimal, a senior engineer from R&D of Hyundai Motor India Ltd, has received a prize money Rs 2.75 lakh and a trip to Switzerland for his (eight) suggestions to remove unwanted parts in a car, which resulted in a reduction of 5.35 kg of Hyundai's cars. Mr H.S. Lheem, Managing Director, Hyundai Motor India, told Business Line that the company began weight reduction campaign last year with a target of achieving 13 kg reduction across all models. The emphasis of the campaign was to reduce weight while improving performance of its cars without compromising on quality and safety. For the customers it ends up improving the fuel economy. Hyundai had announced a reward of Rs 100 for every gram of weight reduced in the cars manufactured by Hyundai Motor India. The company received 262 suggestions. It short listed 38 of them, which accounted for a weight reduction of 13.9 kg with a saving of about $1.2 million. Currently, these suggestions are incorporated only in cars sold in India, but there is a plan to extend it to export models too. - Our Bureau
