Hyderabad, April 28

Designer crops can be safe and will dominate agriculture in the days to come, according to Dr Swapan Dutta, a plant biotechnologist from the University of Calcutta.

“We can no longer have higher productivity using the traditional/conventional way of plant breeding and designer crops would dominate the future agriculture,” Dr Dutta told newspersons at a media conference organised by the All India Crop Biotechnology Association (AICBA) here on Tuesday.

Stating that Bt cotton was being exported from the country on a largescale now, he said the genetically modified (GM) varieties in brinjal and tomato would be launched in the markets soon.

“Fruit and shoot borer variety in brinjal and tomato would be beneficial to the farmers,” he added.

Dr Sajiv Anand, Director, AICBA, said agri-biotechnology would ensure sustainable agriculture in the long-run.
