Air Cargo Air freight pricing questioned
Information pouring in from European Shippers Council suggests that air freight shippers and their representatives meeting in Brussels have questioned decisions by a number of integrators to change the way they calculate charges, making them more expensive. A meeting of ESC’s Air Transport Council has noted recent announcements by TNT, UPS and DHL to increase the rates for light-weight cargo. Light-weight air cargo is charged according to its volumetric weight. For a number of years, it has been calculated on the basis of one kilogramme being equivalent to 6,000 cubic centimetre. DHL and others have revised this measurement and calculate one kg as equivalent to 5,000 cubic cm. The result is higher charges for many shippers. Predictably, ESC has opposed it. Its Secretary General, in a statement, has stated, “We will be looking closer at this in the coming weeks because my members simply cannot understand the justification for it. Carriers and integrators are free to take whatever measures they think are appropriate to their own business, but this comes at a bad time for shippers who deserve greater explanation.” OUR BUREAU
