Durgapur terminal commissioned

The Durgapur (West Bengal) terminal of Container Corporation of India (Concor) was commissioned a few days ago. The terminal, complete with 30 acres of land, has cost Concor about Rs 8 crore to build. This is Concor’s 59th terminal in the country and eighth in the eastern region. The Durgapur terminal is to cater to iron and steel units located in the Durgapur-Asansol industrial belt. SAIL’s Durgapur steel plant, of course, is the most important but there are s everal other private steel plants, though of much smaller capacity, sponge iron units and mini steel plants in the area. The first rake, which left Durgapur for Concor’s Tughalakabad inland container depot near Delhi a few days ago, was loaded with steel plates and ferro-chrome produced by a private steel producer, and the second rake is currently being loaded. To start with, the Durgapur terminal will function in tandem with Concor’s Majherhat terminal in Kolkata port area. For example, the first rake, with the capacity to carry 90 containers, was first loaded at Majherhat (30 boxes) and then at Durgapur (60 boxes). Concor sources hope that in due course, there will be enough inward traffic at Durgapur and the terminal too will be upgraded into a full-fledged container freight station.
