Ambuja Cements net sales rise

Our Bureau

Mumbai, April 22 Ambuja Cements production rose 5.7 per cent to five million tonnes for the first quarter ended March 31, 2009, compared with 4.7 million tonnes logged during the same period the previous year.

Net sales rose on the back of higher volume and marginally improved realisations over the quarter. Exports increased by 44 per cent to 0.28 million tonnes.

Improved productivity and strict cost control measures mitigated the rise in power and fuel cost to some extent, the company said, adding that fuel cost remained relatively high consequent to higher coal cost in opening inventory.

The company said despite its manufacturing units working to full capacity, it was necessary to source some amount of clinker externally, by way of imports included, to increase supplies to the market.

The capex programme of Rs 5,000 crore is on track. During the quarter, a 15 MW captive power unit was commissioned at Bhatapara plant, Chhattisgarh. The bulk cement terminal at Kochi commenced operations and the first shipment had arrived.

Major expansion plans at Bhatapara plant and Rauri in Himachal Pradesh are slated for completion in mid-2009 and at the end of 2009. The plants would increase the company’s annual clinkerisation capacity by 4.4 million tonnes.

Ambuja Cements said the buoyancy in the market might sustain for some time. However, with capacity additions in the pipeline, prices might come under pressure in the second half of the year. Improved productivity and efficiency in operations would be key drivers for profitability in the days to come.
