Rail Wheel Factory posts Rs 28-crore turnover

Bangalore, April 20 Rail Wheel Factory, the subsidiary of Indian Railways manufacturing axels, wheels and wheelsets, has earned revenues of Rs 28.48 crore and profit of Rs 51 lakh during FY 2009 from sales to it non-railway customers.

Set up primarily to cater to the needs of the Railways to reduce its dependence on imports, RWF has built-up a strong external clientele also, including wagon builders in the private sector and industries allowed to own freight wagons.

Its non-Railway customers include wagon builders such as Hindustan Development Engineering Corporation, Braith Waite, Texmaco and BEML, among others.

71% growth

RWF has registered an overall growth of 71 per cent in its turnover at Rs 917.03 crore for year ended March 31, 2009, compared to the previous financial year. RWF has also made significant improvement in bringing down the rejection percentage from 6-7 per cent per annum to 4 per cent last year and is aiming at bringing it down to 1 per cent.

During the year, RWF for the first time crossed the 2,00,000-wheel-production mark and produced 2,09,460 wheels, a growth of 43 per cent over the last fiscal.

The production of axles has gone up by 59.6 per cent to 84,428 units compared to the last fiscal. Its wheelsets output for the year has also increased by 59.6 per cent to 64,673 units.

Addressing the employees recently at a Railway Week function, Mr R.K. Upadhyay, General Manager of RWF, said: “All our machine shops have achieved the maximum production surpassing all the previous records. Our aim is to meet the total requirement of Indian Railways in sustained manner. For this we should work to create a spare capacity of around 20 per cent above the expected target levels, in manufacturing process so as to meet any kind of uncertainty.”
