Tech Mahindra recruits exchange nervous notes on the Web

Adith Charlie

Mumbai, April 14 * First of all congratulations that Tech Mahindra has won the Satyam bid… now please tell us when we would be joining Tech Mahindra?

* As of now I am waiting for the last eight months… How will our condition be post-Satyam? With so many Satyam employees coming into the system, will we be forgotten?

These are some of the postings on social networking sites by those campus recruits (of the 2008 batch) of Tech Mahindra who are still waiting for a ‘date-of-joining’.

While 48,000 employees of Satyam have a reason to cheer, post the announcement of the highest bidder for Satyam, the same fact is worrisome to the ‘employees-in-waiting’ of Tech Mahindra.

There are at least 300 such freshers waiting for a date-of-joining, both the company’s employees and social networking sites indicate. However, this is not a phenomena restricted to Tech Mahindra alone; almost all the major IT companies have delayed the induction of campus recruits due to falling demand for IT services, courtesy the economic downturn. A spokesperson for Tech Mahindra declined to comment on the matter, citing the silent period that the company observes before the announcement of its fourth quarter results. However, sources within the Mahindra group company have indicated that it is keen to bring all freshers-in-the-waiting on board in a staggered manner.

Not many reactions have been added on online communities of Satyam on the Tech Mahindra bid.

Optimisation of human resources is going to be the biggest challenge for the new owner of Satyam, industry analysts feel. If Tech Mahindra were to retain every employee in Satyam, it would be left with a 63,000-strong workforce.

Having said that, there is no legal binding on Tech Mahindra to retain every employee of Satyam, according to Mr Shardul Shroff, Managing Partner, Amarchand Mangaldas, legal advisor to the Satyam board.

And given the current market environment, it is highly unlikely that Tech Mahindrawould want to retain every Satyam employee, analysts feel.

More opportunities?

However, some of those who have been assured employment at Tech Mahindra are of the view that the Satyam win could throw open more opportunities for the company, which in turn would speed up the pace of their induction into the company.

One of them, Priya Rathod, summarises their mood on her blog posting: “May be Tech Mahindra will start getting more and more projects now and hopefully they require more manpower...Bas ab Tech Mahindra joining de ke humein kab khush karegi usi din ka intezar hai (We are just waiting for the day Tech Mahindra would give us a date of joining and make us happy).
