Panel confirms allocation of RIL’s D6 gas to power cos

Our Bureau

New Delhi, April 9 An Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) on Thursday confirmed the allocation of gas for power companies from Reliance Industries Ltd’s D6 block initial output of 40 million standard cubic metres a day (mscmd).

Subsequent to the EGoM decision the two nodal ministries – Petroleum and Power - will now work out plant-wise distribution of gas. Based on this list, RIL will initiate talks with the prospective buyers and ink gas sales and purchase agreements (GSPA).

The officials remained tight lipped about the outcome of the EGoM, which was headed by External Affairs Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, meeting, as the model code of conduct was operational. It may be recalled that in its earlier meeting the EGoM while prioritising the sectors for D6 gas had allocated 18 million standard cubic metres a day (mscmd) for the power sector. The ministerial panel had also then decided on allocation for Ratnagiri Gas & Power Pvt Ltd (RGPPL), erstwhile Dabhol project, from the 18 mscmd earmarked for the power sector. RGPPL is to get 2.7 mscmd of gas initially. The remaining were to be allocated between power plants in Andhra Pradesh and other States. The power plants in Andhra Pradesh will be allocated gas to ensure operations of their plants 70 per cent plant load factor

Any unutilised portion of the five mscmd gas allocated for city gas projects from D6 block will be given to existing gas-based power plants.

Earlier, 15 mscmd of gas from D6 block have been allocated to fertiliser companies. Based on the allocation, RIL and its partner had inked a GSPA with 12 fertiliser companies (15 units) for 14.97 mscmd from the initial output.
